SAINT ANDREWS (GNB) – Local fishermen will be selling freshly-caught lobster directly to the public on Saturday, May 24, as part of a seafood promotion in Saint Andrews by the Fundy North Fishermen's Association and the provincial government's Buy Local initiative.

Interested members of the public will also have the opportunity learn about the fishing family of Dwayne Cook, a fifth-generation fisherman and one of the youngest members of the association.

“The Buy Local tour encourages people to get to know where their local food comes from and to meet people who work in this sector,” said Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries Minister Michael Olscamp. “This is an excellent opportunity to buy excellent local lobster and to get to know more about the hard-working people who supply it.”

The association represents small-scale commercial fishermen from St. Martins to St. Stephen including the communities of Deer Island and Campobello Island, as well as river fishermen who work on the Saint John and Magaguadavic River systems.

“By supporting this Project Seafood, you are supporting traditional fishing practices and the local fishermen behind them, along with their families and communities,” Maria Recchia, executive director of the Fundy North Fishermen's Association. “Project Seafood helps you become more connected to your food source so that you can know just where your food is coming from, who is supplying it, and what steps were taken to get it to you.”

People interested in ordering lobster through Project Seafood must contact the association and place their order by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21, for pick-up in Saint Andrews on May 24.
