SAINT-LOUIS DE KENT (CNB) – New weight restrictions are being placed on the Saint-Louis de Kent bridge, Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Claude Williams announced today.

The allowable load is now five tonnes, down from 12 tonnes. This means only cars and pick-up trucks will be able to cross the bridge.

"We have been doing regular inspections and monitoring of the bridge, and the most recent reports indicate that we need to reduce the tonnage to maintain the bridge safely until a new one is built," said Williams. "I will not take any risks with the safety of the travelling public."

Vehicles weighing more than the five-tonne posted load limit will have a maximum 12 kilometre detour, depending on their destination.

The bridge, which spans the Kouchibouguacis River, is slated for replacement.

The bridge will continue to be monitored, and regular reports on its condition will be sent to the minister's office.
