OROMOCTO (CNB) – The 10th anniversary of the opening of the Fredericton-Moncton Highway and its impact on the province are being celebrated today by the provincial government and MRDC Operations Corp.

"We are celebrating an impressive accomplishment in design, engineering and innovation,"said  Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Claude Williams. "We are also recognizing what has become an efficient way of building our infrastructure through public/private partnerships.”

"The new highway has substantially reduced the number of collisions and fatalities,” he said. “This has made travel in our province safer and strengthened the economy of our province and of the Maritime region."

"MRDC’s most important asset is our team of dedicated workers that has been successfully assuring the maintenance, the rehabilitation and the safety of this highway over the past decade," said Ross Mathers, general manager of MRDC Operations Corp.

The 195-kilometre, four-lane highway between Fredericton and Moncton was officially opened on Oct. 23, 2001.
