LINCOLN (GNB) – Construction on a $10-million kindergarten to Grade 5 school in Lincoln is officially underway.

Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Jody Carr, Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Claude Williams and Government Services Minister Craig Leonard joined local and school district officials in a sod-turning ceremony at the site today.

"Our government recognizes the importance of providing modern, dynamic, inclusive learning environments for our students," said Carr. "This school will help meet the 21st-century needs of the Lincoln Elementary Community School students."

The school is being built on a 12-hectare (30-acre) property at 2475 Lincoln Rd., Route 102, Lincoln.  

"This new school will be modern and energy-efficient while providing a safe and quality learning environment for students and staff," Williams said. "We are helping New Brunswickers care for their families by investing in improvements to education and early childhood development. School infrastructure is a fundamental component of delivering new opportunities for our children to learn, grow and meet their full potential."

Springhill Construction Ltd. of Fredericton won the construction contract for the work on the 3,722-square-metre (40,048-sq.-ft.) school, which will include 12 classrooms, a music room, resource rooms, a gym, cafeteria, library and project work areas for students.

The building will be constructed in accordance with the province's Green Building Policy.

Construction is expected to be completed in the fall of 2013. The old school was demolished at the current site in the summer of 2011.
