BATHURST (GNB) – The replacement of the Middle River Bridge in Bathurst will be completed in the spring of 2013.

“Replacing the Middle River Bridge in Bathurst is taking more time than originally planned due to a delay in the supply of the steel structure,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Claude Williams. “A new modular bridge will be installed this winter, but concrete for the deck, barrier walls, and the asphalt wearing surface will not be placed until spring 2013 when weather conditions permit.”

Williams said there should be no increased costs to taxpayers as a result of the delay in opening the new bridge. Construction work began in April 2012 and was originally scheduled to be completed this fall.

The $2 million project involves replacement of the two-lane bridge on Riverside Drive. The old Middle River Bridge was built in 1956.

A detour will continue throughout the winter months and signage will remain in place. The maximum length of the detour is about five kilometres.
