FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government has sold the former York County Courthouse in Fredericton, Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Claude Williams announced today.

“Under government renewal, we have been reviewing our current building assets,” Williams said. “As part of this process, we are looking at several government-owned properties in downtown Fredericton in terms of future use. The successful sale of the former York County Courthouse will produce savings and revenue for the province, while allowing it to continue being used and enjoyed by the community.”

The courthouse property includes a 1,633.4 sq. metres (18,149 sq. feet) lot with a two-storey brick structure of about 890 sq. metres (9,890 sq. feet).

Built in 1855, the building served both as a courthouse (upstairs) and a market (downstairs). In 1882, the first floor was rebuilt to provide space for county offices and records. In 1956, it was extensively renovated and modernized and for several years, housed branches of the departments of Justice and Solicitor General.

The province declared the property surplus in late 2011 and it was posted for sale in March 2012.
