MEMRAMCOOK (GNB) – The provincial government will invest $5 million over the coming year to begin repairs and renovations to ensure the preservation of the historic Memramcook complex.

The funding will be included in the 2017-18 capital budget.

“The Memramcook institute has been an important contributor to the economy of the southeast and the community of Memramcook. It is also a location of historic importance,” said Premier Brian Gallant.

The Memramcook complex, formerly known as Collège Saint-Joseph, was founded in 1864. Located in the heart of Memramcook, the complex has served as a seminary, a college, a university, and also housed other organizations over the years. The provincial government has owned the complex since Canada’s Centennial Year of 1967.

“It is especially fitting to be here for this announcement as we celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation,” said Memramcook-Tantramar MLA Bernard LeBlanc. “The province has already identified occupants for 20 per cent of the building and these investments will make it possible to secure additional tenants to ensure the viability of this asset well into the future. We are confident we will be able to announce new tenants soon to keep this important piece of infrastructure a part of daily life in this community.”

LeBlanc attended for Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser.
