McADAM (GNB) – The provincial government will pave 7.2 kilometres of Route 4 this year, from Diffen Road to the McAdam village limit, as part of the 2017-18 capital budget. The cost of the project is $2.2 million.

“Your government understands the importance of making strategic investments in our roads and bridges,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser. “Route 4 is an important corridor in southwestern New Brunswick, one that businesses rely upon to get their goods to market quickly and efficiently, and that residents rely upon to travel safely through this part of the province.”

The government is also funding storm sewer, curb and gutter work along a 100-metre stretch of Route 4 within the village limits, from Cherry Street to Poplar Street, as part of the Municipal Designated Highway Program.

“Our government understands the importance of investing in communities,” said Fraser. “We are listening to our municipal partners and getting things done.”

Under the program, municipalities apply for funding assistance for capital upgrade projects. The government received more than $210-million in funding requests through the program this year. Funding for the program has more than doubled since the 2014-15 fiscal year, increasing to $25 million in 2015. It has remained at that level as part of a government commitment to sustain funding for municipalities.

“Major infrastructure investments for our community would not be possible without the support of the provincial government,” said McAdam Mayor Ken Stannix. “We appreciate the province’s focus on strategic infrastructure, which is also a priority of our municipal government.”

The province’s $775.6-million capital budget, which includes the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure’s capital budget of $638.5 million, reflects the government’s priority to invest strategically in its buildings, highways and bridges.

Strategic investments in infrastructure are a key component of the New Brunswick Economic Growth Plan, the government’s framework for growing the economy and creating jobs.
