MIRAMICHI (GNB) – King Street Elementary School officially opened on Monday, Nov. 27, in Miramichi.

“Education is crucial to our economy and to the health of our families,” said Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Brian Kenny. “We recognize the importance of having the proper infrastructure in place as we work with our partners to implement our 10-year education plans.”

The $18 million K-5 school has 21 classrooms, music and art rooms, project work areas, a gymnasium, a multi-purpose room and a library, as well as administration offices and storage facilities.

The school accommodates about 400 students and replaces Ian Baillie Primary School, built in 1959, and St. Andrews Elementary School, built in 1963. Adjacent to the school grounds there is also a new $1.5 million multi-sport turf field.

“I am excited today to see this new school open and full of students,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser. “The community is happy to have this important infrastructure to accommodate the needs of current and future students.”

Funding of $100,000 is being provided towards a new $216,000 playground project at the King Street Elementary School.

The government’s 10-year education plans aim to improve educational outcomes and better prepare young people for the future. They set objectives in priority areas to create lifelong learners, support educational leaders and bring stability to the system.
