NEW DENMARK (GNB) – Significant repairs to an important trucking corridor will continue this year as part of the provincial government’s 2018-19 capital budget.
“Your government recognizes that the safe and efficient flow of people and goods is critical to economic growth,” said Premier Brian Gallant. “Through our multi-year economic growth plan, we are investing strategically in transportation infrastructure to create jobs and fuel the economy.”
The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure will issue a tender this spring for the second phase of a major reconstruction project on Route 108 in New Denmark. The first phase, completed in 2017, included the grading and paving of a 1.1 kilometre section of the road. This year, work will continue on a 2.6 kilometre section adjacent to last year’s work. The total project cost is estimated at $7 million.
Each day, about 600 vehicles make the through trip on Route 108, including 150 transport trucks. The road is also an important corridor between the communities of Grand Falls and Plaster Rock.
The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure’s $688.2 million capital budget reflects the government’s priority to invest strategically in its buildings, highways and bridges. Strategic investments in infrastructure are a key component of the multi-year New Brunswick Economic Growth Plan, the province’s framework for growing the economy and creating jobs.
