WOODSTOCK (GNB) – The provincial government will invest almost $1.5 million in paving and chipseal projects in the Woodstock area this year as part of its 2018-19 capital budget.

“To keep the economy moving forward, we need to maintain and improve our transportation infrastructure,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser. “We are investing strategically in roads and highways to spur economic development and create jobs.”

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure will pave a 1.3 kilometre section of Beardsley Road, from Pine Street to Tamarack Street. A 1.7 kilometre section of Beardsley Road, from Route 165 to Pine Street, will be resealed, as will a 10-kilometre section of Hodgdon Road, from Route 2 to Route 540.

Under the Municipal Designated Highway Program, the department will fund, with the Town of Woodstock, the paving of a 600-metre section of Connell Street, from NB Power to Elm Street, and the installation of storm sewers, curb and gutter on Connell Street, from Emerald Street to Elm Street.

The Municipal Designated Highway Program allows municipalities to apply for funding assistance for capital upgrade projects. Funding for the program has more than doubled since the 2014-15 fiscal year, increasing to $25 million in 2015. It has remained at that level as part of a government commitment to sustain funding for municipalities.

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure’s $688.2 million capital budget reflects the government’s priority of investing strategically in its buildings, highways and bridges. Strategic investments in infrastructure are a key component of the multi-year New Brunswick Economic Growth Plan, the province’s framework for growing the economy and creating jobs.
