EDMUNDSTON (GNB) – The Environmental Trust Fund will invest more than $105,000 in seven environmental projects in the northwest region of New Brunswick in 2015-16.

“Our government is committed to ensuring that the fund is used for grassroots environmental projects,” said Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Francine Landry. “We are pleased to support these community-based environmental initiatives that will benefit our province’s air, land and water resources.”

Landry spoke on behalf of Environment and Local Government Minister Brian Kenny.

The following projects will receive funding in the northwest region:

  • The Comité de l’aménagement rural du Nord-Ouest (CARNO) will undertake three projects:

1.    Implement a detailed watershed management plan for this region ($20,000);

2.    Identify causes of blue-green algae growth in Lac Unique and carry out restorative measures ($25,000);

3.    Work to protect the water quality of the Iroquois/Blanchette watershed ($26,900);

  • Regional Service Commission #1 will carry out two projects:

1.    Ensure the proper disposal of household hazardous waste in the region ($15,000);

2.    Help reduce waste generated by schools, ($10,000);

  • The Edmundston campus of the Université de Moncton will conduct two projects:

1.    Assess the potential of thermal energy stocking for residential purposes, ($5,000);

2.    Assess the potential of pumped storage hydro-electric plants in the province, ($5,000).

A total of 232 projects valued at $6.2 million have been approved for funding under the Environmental Trust Fund. In addition, another $1.8 million has been set aside to support other projects that will benefit the environment in the coming year.

The fund provides assistance to community groups, organizations, municipalities and institutions for projects that produce tangible, measurable benefits to the environment.
