BATHURST (GNB) – The provincial government is supporting environmental groups in the Bathurst region by contributing about $146,000 from the Environmental Trust Fund to six projects.

“I am pleased that the fund could provide support to these excellent environmental projects in the Bathurst region,” said Environment and Local Government Minister Brian Kenny. “Our government committed to ensuring that the fund is used for grassroots environmental projects such as these which will protect, preserve and enhance the province's natural environment, making life better for New Brunswick families.”

The following projects received funding:

  • Bathurst Sustainable Development will educate and engage the public about the critical importance of soil protection and preservation ($50,000);
  • the City of Bathurst will develop a Climate Change Adaptation Plan to help protect residents from the effects of erosion and sea level rise ($35,000);
  • Daly Point Nature Reserve will conduct an environmental education and outreach program in partnership with the City of Bathurst ($14,000);
  • the Nepisiguit Salmon Association will collect data on the status of Atlantic salmon and undertake habitat enhancement activities to improve survival rates ($12,000); and
  • Regional Service Commission 3 will encourage the recycling of material in the region’s institutional, commercial and industrial sectors ($30,000) and will promote recycling in local schools ($5,000).

The fund provides assistance to community groups, organizations, municipalities and institutions for projects that produce tangible, measurable benefits to the environment.

A total of 232 projects valued at $6.2 million have been approved for funding under the Environmental Trust Fund in the following priority action areas:

  • protecting our environment;
  • increasing environmental awareness;
  • managing our waste;
  • addressing climate change; and
  • building sustainable communities.
