FREDERICTON (GNB) – The following message about the importance of being environmentally-friendly during the holidays was released today by Environment and Local Government Minister Brian Kenny:

The holidays are here and it is time to celebrate and enjoy our families, friends and unique traditions. It is a time to reflect on what is truly important to us; on what we value.

We know New Brunswickers value clean air and water, and a safe environment. We also know fighting climate change is top of mind for many people. We can all play a part in protecting the environment and it starts with small changes and conscious choices.

There are many ways to help protect the environment during the holiday season. Here are just a few ideas:

  • Buy a real Christmas tree. Not only can it be disposd of in an environmentally-friendly way, buying one supports local businesses or non-profit organizations.
  • Choose green gifts or donate to an environmental cause in lieu of a gift.
  • Purchase energy efficient electronics; look for the Energy Star logo or EnerGuide label.
  • Buy rechargeable batteries for toys or other gifts.
  • Reuse wrapping paper or gift bags, or use newspaper or recycled paper to wrap  gifts as most commercial wrapping paper cannot be recycled.
  • Send e-cards.
  • Use LED Christmas lights to minimize energy consumption and turn the lights off before going to bed.

During the month of December people produce more waste than at any other time of the year. Our landfills see a significant increase in volume. You can make a difference with the following tips:

  • Plan your grocery purchase to avoid excessive food waste.
  • Use reusable bags when shopping.
  • Recycle beverage bottles, cans, and cardboard.
  • Recycle old cell phones and wireless devices if a new one is under the tree.

Join us in helping spread the word by tweeting your ideas on reducing, reusing and recycling during the holiday season using #greenholidayNB.

When we each take steps in our daily lives to reduce our carbon footprint and to protect our environment, we are giving a gift to future generations of New Brunswickers.

I wish all New Brunswickers a peaceful and wonderful holiday.
