FREDERICTON (GNB) – Making environmentally friendly choices this holiday season can help combat climate change and keep New Brunswick's air, land and water clean.

Whether buying gifts or preparing for a holiday party, New Brunswickers can be kind to the environment by following these tips:

• Buy a real Christmas tree. It can be disposed of in an environmentally friendly way, and the purchase also supports local businesses or non-profit organizations.

• Choose “green” gifts or donate to an environmental cause in lieu of a gift.

• Purchase energy-efficient electronics; look for the Energy Star logo or EnerGuide label.

• Reuse wrapping paper or gift bags, or use newspaper or recycled paper to wrap gifts since most commercial wrapping paper cannot be recycled.

• Reduce waste by sending greeting cards electronically, or choose cards printed on recycled paper.

• Buy gifts with less packaging, and recycle when possible.

• Donate to a local charity or non-profit group in the recipient's name, or give the gift of time by helping a neighbour shovel snow or helping with household chores or repairs.

• Choose energy-efficient holiday lights, and put them on timers to reduce electricity costs.

• Carpool or take public transit to holiday parties. If you have to fly over the holidays, consider purchasing carbon offsets.

• Plan your grocery purchases to avoid excessive food waste.

• Take along reusable bags when shopping.

The amount of waste generated increases significantly over the holiday season. New Brunswickers are encouraged to make a difference through environmentally sound choices.
