BATHURST (GNB) – The provincial government is providing $373,200 through the Environmental Trust Fund for 12 projects in the Chaleur region in 2018-19.

“Your government is committed to protecting the environment with investments that help us provide the necessary support for local and provincewide projects,” said Justice and Public Safety Minister Denis Landry. “This regional funding contributes to local job creation, as well as protecting the environment, raising awareness and addressing climate change.”

Landry spoke on behalf of Environment and Local Government Minister Andrew Harvey.

The announcement was made at the Daly Point Nature Reserve, which is receiving $25,000 to continue promoting environmental education and wetland protection in the Chaleur region.

“We are pleased to be granted this funding,” said the nature reserve’s program co-ordinator, Janet Doucet. “It will go a long way in helping us reach our goals of promoting a greener tomorrow for our communities.”

Other projects in the region receiving funding include those conducted by the Chaleur Regional Service Commission, the City of Bathurst, Bathurst Sustainable Development, the Écomarché régional de Beresford and the Nepisiguit Salmon Association.

The 2018-19 Environmental Trust Fund priority action areas are:

• protecting the environment;

• increasing environmental awareness;

• managing waste;

• addressing climate change; and

• building sustainable communities.

The Environmental Trust Fund is investing about $8.4 million in environmental projects in 2018-19. This includes 227 community-based environmental initiatives worth more than $6.6 million, as well as almost $1.8 million in provincewide projects.
