FREDERICTON (CNB) – More than 1,600 New Brunswickers took part in 20 different consultation sessions hosted by Local Government Minister Bruce Fitch on enhancing local governance. In addition, more than 40 submissions were submitted and posted through the consultation website.

"Our consultation process has been rewarding and humbling as so many New Brunswickers shared their ideas and concerns on the topic of local governance enhancements," said Fitch. "While some challenges and opportunities are common throughout the province, each community has its unique set of circumstances that must be taken into account."

The consultation process came to a close on June 10.

There were four surveys available on the website. More than 600 surveys were completed and will be included in the information to be used in coming up with the next steps to enhance local governance.

The synopsis from the 10 regional service delivery stakeholder sessions, which were by invitation to municipalities, local service districts and service providers, has been posted to the consultation website.

A synopsis of the 10 public sessions on community financing arrangements; property taxation and assessment; and regional service delivery is being compiled and will be released in the coming weeks.

"We will analyze the information and ideas that were brought forward and announce our next steps this fall," added Fitch. "We have committed not to force amalgamations, but we will continue to strongly encourage communities to work together and to collaborate more effectively. This will reduce costs and duplication throughout our province."
