CARAQUET (CNB) - A co-operation agreement between New Brunswick and France's Département du Nord was renewed today for an additional five years. Minister of Wellness, Culture and Sport Hédard Albert, who is also minister responsible for the Francophonie, signed the agreement on behalf of the Government of New Brunswick.

By renewing the agreement, New Brunswick and the Département du Nord are reaffirming their desire to encourage the involvement of their respective partners in the areas of youth, culture and the environment, and in economic and social spheres.

Albert said that the co-operation agreement fits well with the government's development efforts.

"New Brunswick's interest in this region of France rests on the existence of a shared language, and populations that are culturally, socially, and economically dynamic," said Albert. "Both jurisdictions also want to to provide residents and tourists alike with the highest quality of life.

"For New Brunswick, the geographic location of the Département du Nord represents a gateway to Europe. Likewise, we offer the Département du Nord a foothold in North America. Our proximity to Canadian and American markets constitutes an appealing portal on the continent."

While fostering economic ties, co-operation between New Brunswick and the Département du Nord will also allow for increased student exchanges, cultural and tourism promotion, and the protection of natural spaces.

Over the last five years, co-operation with the Département du Nord has generated promising opportunities in arts and culture. The years ahead will be focused on making exchanges more productive, and increasing their positive results on both sides of the Atlantic.
