FREDERICTON (CNB) – New Brunswick will join the other provinces and territories next year in celebration of the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's accession to the throne.

"The occasion of  the Queen's Diamond Jubilee is a time for New Brunswickers, and indeed all Canadians, to celebrate the contributions of our head of state and to reflect on our nation's growth during her reign," said Premier David Alward.

The Queen's representative in New Brunswick, Lt.-Gov. Graydon Nicholas, is also enthusiastic about next year's celebrations.

"We are excited about the possibilities for commemorating the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and I think New Brunswickers are as well,” said Nicholas. “The Queen has celebrated a number of historic events with us over the past 60 years, during her official visits to Canada, including the bicentennial of our province."

The anniversary is Feb. 6, 2012, but celebrations and commemorations are expected to take place throughout the year and will be co-ordinated by the Department of Intergovernmental Affairs and the federal Department of Canadian Heritage. More information on how New Brunswickers can participate will be available in the coming months.

The Queen and Prince Philip made their first visit to Canada and New Brunswick in 1951 as Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh. New Brunswick hosted them again in 1959, 1976, and 1984 and was included in the 2002 Jubilee tour.
