ATHOLVILLE (CNB) – A new water booster station officially opened in Atholville. The federal and provincial governments as well as the Village of Atholville invested in the project.

The ceremony was attended by Premier Shawn Graham, Senator Percy Mockler and Atholville Mayor Raymond Lagacé.

“Our investment will help ensure that New Brunswick communities such as Atholville have quality infrastructure to protect residents' health and wellness,” said Graham. “Ensuring that we have strong infrastructure is vital for New Brunswick to remain positioned to be self-sufficient.”

The water boosting station will serve Atholville and three neighbouring communities. The project also provides for improvements to the wastewater system scheduled to start later in the year.

“Our government has been working together with provincial and municipal governments to deliver results to the people of New Brunswick through important improvements and upgrades to municipal water systems,” said Mockler. “Our federal investment through the Building Canada Fund has made a real difference in Atholville and local communities by strengthening infrastructure, improving the quality of life and helping our economy.”

Mockler was speaking on behalf of National Revenue Minister Keith Ashfield, who is also minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and minister for the Atlantic Gateway.

“We would like to thank both levels of government, federal and provincial, for their support in this project,” said Lagacé. “This infrastructure is important for improving our drinking water system and for assisting us in sharing services between municipalities in case of an emergency.”

The federal and New Brunswick governments each invested $185,496, for a total of $370,992. The Village of Atholville provided $185,498.
