GRAND MANAN (CNB) - The provincial government is making an investment in the conservation of the light keeper's house and other facilities at the Swallowtail Lighthouse on Grand Manan.
Fisheries Minister Rick Doucet and Wellness, Culture and Sport Minister Hédard Albert made the announcement during the 150th anniversary of the historic lighthouse.
"The Swallowtail Light Keeper's House on Grand Manan is designated a local historic place for its association with the island's long association with the sea," said Doucet. "Our investments will ensure it continues to remain a site for residents and visitors."
The provincial government is investing a total of $55,000: $30,000 from the Heritage Branch of the Department of Wellness, Culture and Sport; and $25,000 from the Regional Development Corporation.
"We are proud to be the new generation of keepers of Grand Manan's iconic light station," said Laurie Murison, chairperson, Friends of the Swallowtail Keepers Society. "We look forward to preserving and promoting the light-keeping tradition."
The organization is contributing $10,000.
