EDMUNDSTON (CNB) – Plastics manufacturer IPL Inc. is adopting new technologies that will reduce production costs and boost competitiveness, thanks to investments of almost $1 million by the federal and provincial governments.

"Investing in all regions of northern New Brunswick, including Madawaska, is important for our government and for business," said Health Minister Madeline Dubé. "Our investment in IPL Inc. will ensure the success of this important company to Edmundston and the region."

Dubé spoke on behalf of Economic Development Minister Paul Robichaud.

"The Government of Canada's central priority is the health of our economy and jobs and growth for Canadians," said Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and La Francophonie Bernard Valcourt. "Through ACOA's Business Development Program, our investment of $500,000 will help IPL acquire state-of-the-art technology that will contribute to increase the company's productivity and improve its competitiveness."

IPL Inc. is planning to acquire an In-Mold Flexible system, a technology that will allow the company to use its existing labeling equipment to full capacity. The proposed upgrade will also help the company develop and manufacture a variety of new products, which will open up new markets.

"These new investments will allow IPL to compete in a food packaging industry where the clients' demands are increasingly focused on customized products" said Pierre Hébert, executive director of IPL inc. in Edmundston. "This equipment will enable Edmundston's plant and its employees to continue on a path of growth and success."

Through ACOA's Business Development Program, the Government of Canada is providing a repayable contribution of $500,000 toward the project, while the provincial government is investing $480,000.

ACOA helps deliver Canada's Economic Action Plan the plan in Atlantic Canada by focusing on improved business skills and productivity, innovation, commercialization and adoption of new technologies, increased access for businesses to international markets, and stronger communities.
