SAINT JOHN (CNB) –  The provincial government is investing $150,000 in infrastructure improvements at the Saint John Boys and Girls Club.

"Our government is proud to invest in our young New Brunswickers through partnerships such as the Boys and Girls Club of Saint John's recreational infrastructure improvement projects," said Premier David Alward. "Our investment will help ensure the club will continue to provide a safe, fun meeting place for the region's young people."

Funding provided through the Regional Development Corporation will be used towards installing a new playground and upgrading the club's gymnasium. The gymnasium improvement project includes renovations to the 46-year-old facility which consists of replacing, repairing and upgrading bleachers, walls, and floor. A new all-accessible playground will also be installed on site, replacing the current 20-year-old structure.

"This contribution from the province is an affirmation of the important role that the Boys and Girls Club plays in Saint John,” said David Merrithew, campaign co-chair. “We are grateful to the Province of New Brunswick for this significant contribution to our Heart of the Possible capital campaign, and for their demonstrated commitment to the children and youth served by the club."

"Improving our club's infrastructure enables us to nurture young people's self-esteem and engage them in activities that challenge and enrich their minds, bodies and spirits,” said Cathy Rignanesi, co-chair of the campaign. “The  much-needed improvements to the club that will be funded with this contribution will allow us to keep our focus on the positive potential of every child."
