SAINT JOHN (GNB) – The provincial government is investing $20,000 toward the cost of hosting the 2017 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League annual session and entry draft in Saint John this June.

“This investment will help bring hundreds of people to Saint John and about a $1.5 million economic boost to the port city,” said Premier Brian Gallant.”

The QMJHL Annual Session will be held from May 31 to June 3 with the draft taking place on June 3 at Harbour Station. The event marks the first time the annual session and entry draft will be held in Saint John. The draft allows the 18 teams in the league to select players from Quebec and Atlantic Canada who are eligible to be drafted, starting at 16 years of age.

“We are excited to host this major event in Saint John,” said Gallant. “The QMJHL draft week is a great opportunity to showcase all that we have to offer in New Brunswick.”

“We are very appreciative of the leadership shown by the Province of New Brunswick in supporting the 2017 QMJHL Entry Draft in Saint John,” said Trevor Georgie, president and general manager of the Saint John Sea Dogs. “Draft week is a spectacle and an opportunity for us to celebrate our love for the game and showcase our great city to the hockey world.”
