MONCTON (GNB) – Atlantic Canada’s only barrier-free ball field, the Field of Dreams, was officially opened today at the CN Sportplex in Moncton.

The facility includes artificial turf, accessible dugouts and expanded bleachers. Improvements also include a designated drop-off section and accessible parking close to the field, with a paved trail linking the washrooms, parking lot and field.

“Thanks to the hard work of many people, the Field of Dreams is not just a dream anymore,” said Finance Minister Cathy Rogers. “This project is a perfect example of the great work that happens when municipal and provincial governments work together with local groups which are working towards creating positive change in our communities. With this project completed, children with different abilities can fulfil their dreams of playing baseball. The facility will serve New Brunswickers, especially those in the Greater Moncton area, for many years.”

The provincial government, through the Regional Development Corporation, the City of Moncton and the Greater Moncton Field of Dreams Baseball Program each invested $167,000 toward the project.

“I would like to applaud the group of parents and volunteers who pushed for this project many years ago and worked tirelessly to see it through to the end,” said Moncton Mayor Dawn Arnold. “We strive to be an inclusive and welcoming city and the creation of this new field ensures the game of baseball can be enjoyed by all.”

The President’s Choice Children’s Charity donated $165,000 to the Field of Dreams Baseball Program. The local program also received $125,000 from the Blue Jays Care Foundation. Both donations allowed the Field of Dreams Program to fulfil their portion of the project funding and to set aside the remaining funds for additional features in the future. Atlantic Superstore and Pita Pit also both donated $10,000.

“Many thanks to the Province of New Brunswick, the City of Moncton, Atlantic Superstore and the President’s Choice Children’s Charities Foundation, Blue Jays Care Foundation and Pita Pit for supporting our dreams of providing a safe and accessible playing field for athletes with disabilities,” said Charline Allain Godin, organizer from the Field of Dreams Baseball Program. “Young people with disabilities get to experience a renewed sense of joy and freedom on the field. Seeing the smiles on their faces makes everything worth it.”
