SAINT JOHN (GNB) – Construction has begun on the new $26.5-million Greater Saint John Field House.

“Your government recognizes the importance of investing in infrastructure to stimulate the economy and improve the quality of life of New Brunswick families,” said Energy and Resource Development Minister Rick Doucet. “The investment in the Greater Saint John Field House will help families stay active and create good construction jobs in the region.”

Doucet spoke on behalf of Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser, who is also the minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation.

Doucet and other dignitaries participated in a sod-turning at the site today.

“The Greater Saint John Field House will support local athletes as well as attract sporting events, while providing a place where people can stay active and connect with one another,” said Saint John-Rothesay MP Wayne Long. “Infrastructure projects such as this not only enhance the quality of life for New Brunswickers, they create well-paying jobs that help our communities grow and prosper.”

The field house will be the only facility of its kind in southern New Brunswick, featuring two indoor turf fields, a 200-metre indoor track, fitness rooms, multi-purpose areas, community spaces and outdoor trails.

“Saint John will reap the rewards of this investment for decades to come,” said Saint John Mayor Don Darling. “The Greater Saint John Field House will serve as a catalyst for growth by enhancing our residents’ quality of life and positioning our community as a leading destination for sporting events, which will result in a significant economic impact for the region.”

In July 2017, the provincial government announced a $6-million non-repayable contribution through the Regional Development Corporation. The federal government is investing $6 million through the Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component of the New Building Canada Fund. The City of Saint John is providing $4.2 million.

“After years of work, we are thrilled to finally be at this point, beginning construction,” said Bill MacMackin, president of the Greater Saint John Field House. “We are fully committed to this facility, bringing this project to completion and open for users in the fall of 2019. It will benefit the people of Greater Saint John for many years to come as a place for local sports and recreational programs. Our board is so excited to be at this point today.”
