GRAND MANAN (CNB) – The provincial government made a commitment today to replace the aging Grand Manan Nursing Home.

Social Development Minister Sue Stultz, who is also minister responsible for seniors, housing and community non-profit organizations, made the announcement today. She did so after visiting the facility and meeting with residents, staff and administration.

"Replacing the Grand Manan Nursing Home is necessary," said Stultz. "It is evident that the facility is nearing the end of its functionality. As a result of the worsening condition, the review of the Grand Manan Nursing Home will be given top priority as the review of the nursing home renovation and replacement plan continues to find efficiencies."

When the project was announced in June 2010, the estimated cost was $9 million. Costs have since increased to more than $13 million.

Staff from the departments of Social Development and Supply and Services will immediately begin working with the nursing home to find efficiencies and cost savings in the construction of the nursing home to ensure the project is proceeding in the most cost-effective way possible. Discussions will also focus on a construction timeline and the medium- and long-term demographic needs of the community.

"I commend the administration and staff at Grand Manan Nursing Home for their hard work and dedication to helping their clients during very difficult circumstances," Stultz said. "This has been a trying time for nursing home residents and their families. I wish to assure them that the provincial government is committed to working with the nursing home to resolve this issue as quickly as possible."
