FREDERICTON (CNB) – Free workshops will be held in Saint John and Moncton by the Public Legal Education and Information Service of New Brunswick to answer seniors' questions about volunteerism.

"This initiative creates a win-win situation for everyone since communities will benefit from the wealth of skills and talents that senior volunteers can bring to an organization," said Social Development Sue Stultz, who is also minister responsible for seniors. "Encouraging seniors to become involved in community groups and activities will help reduce social isolation of older adults."

The workshops will review volunteer law and introduce a new self-assessment tool created by the Public Legal Education and Information Service of New Brunswick that will help volunteers assess their skills and interests.

"We know there is interest in the community in volunteerism, especially among seniors, who may be looking for projects to take on in their retirement years," said Deborah Doherty, executive director, Public Legal Education and Information Service of New Brunswick. "However, many potential volunteers might not know where to start, and many have questions about the legal rights and responsibilities of volunteers. We are especially pleased to launch this initiative during the same week as Canada's National Seniors Day, Oct. 1."

The Saint John workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Sept. 27, at the Saint John Trade and Convention Centre. The Moncton workshop, to be offered in English and French, will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, Sept. 30, at the Crowne Plaza Moncton.

The Public Legal Education and Information Service of New Brunswick will hold recruitment fairs on the same days to bring together interested seniors with community groups that would welcome their time and contributions to volunteer work. These fairs will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at both locations. Participants will be able to learn about services and programs in their community, the role of volunteers and how their interests might match up.  

The New Horizons for Seniors Program provided funding for this project by way of the Community Participation and Leadership Fund.
