FREDERICTON (CNB) – New Brunswick seniors are encouraged to participate in Active Living Week for Seniors, Oct. 16-22.

“Almost 68 per cent of New Brunswick seniors are physically active and another 32 per cent are moderately active," said Social Development Minister Sue Stultz, who is also minister responsible for seniors, housing and community non-profit organizations. "This is a good indicator on the health of our senior population. When seniors are healthy and active, they live longer and stronger."

Of the 119,000 senior citizens in New Brunswick, about 85 per cent are living independently without receiving support services from the provincial government.

Stultz said that as the province's senior population grows, their health and wellness becomes a top priority.

"We want our seniors to stay active, enjoy good health and greater independence for a high quality of life," Stultz said. "By embracing active living, we can build a healthy senior population and a sustainable long-term care system."

Active Living Week for Seniors refers to physical activity as well as volunteer, social and cultural activities which involve seniors in their communities.

As part of the week, the Senior and Healthy Aging Secretariat have information sheets available on topics such as: eating well, physical activity, tobacco-free living, mental health, a healthy smile, vision care, and sleeping.
