FREDERICTON (CNB) – York Care Centre in Fredericton celebrated the official opening of its Phase 2, Stage 2 expansion today, marking the completion of a $36-million investment made in the nursing home since 2005.

"This is an important step forward at York Care Centre," said Premier David Alward. "As part of this project, 16 beds have been added to the facility, and new accommodations have been created for resident living, family interaction, space for research and training, and much more. This new infrastructure provides lasting progress for seniors in our province."

Alward said the expansion is another example of how York Care Centre is advancing senior care. The facility is also the originator and home base for the Atlantic Institute for Aging, which focuses on excellence in care and preparing the province for a rapidly aging population.

"Our board of directors is justifiably proud of the achievements of our facility during the past six years," said Kevin Roherty, chairman, York Care Centre. "Building on a strong foundation left by previous boards and administrations, we now can be happy that our residents live in the most modern facilities available, and our organization is set as a leader in Atlantic Canada, already having an influence far beyond the walls of the building."

York Care Centre was built in 1967 and has grown from a 76-bed facility to a nursing home with 214 beds as well as assisted-living accommodations and senior apartments. It is one of the largest nursing homes in New Brunswick and employs about 230 full-time staff.
