EDMUNDSTON (GNB) – The provincial government is increasing its annual funding to l'Escale MadaVic transition house in Edmundston to allow the shelter to add five new beds.

The organization currently operates a 10-bed transition house for women and children who are the victims of relationship violence.

“Our government is proud to contribute funding to support the work being done by l'Escale MadaVic transition house in its goal of providing a new, larger shelter for women and children in the Edmundston region,” said Social Development Minster Madeline Dubé. “With the addition of these new beds, the shelter will be able to offer more victims of violence a safe place to begin the transition to a life free of abuse.”

The Department of Social Development will provide almost $14,000 in additional funding to the shelter, which will bring its total yearly funding to more than $245,000. The funding supports the operational costs of the transition house and the delivery of the Child Witness of Family Violence Program.

The transition house purchased and renovated an older building to better serve victims of violence. This renovation project was supported by the Shelter Enhancement Program with an investment of $300,000.

L'Escale MadaVic also received $15,000 from the department to assist with its move to the new location which took place in January.

“Making the decision to leave an abusive relationship is not easy especially when faced with the possibility of having to leave family, friends and the community,” said Dubé. “By providing additional beds, women and children can remain close to their loved ones while getting the help and support they need in their own community.”

L'Escale MadaVic transition house provides guidance, support, crisis intervention, psycho-educational intervention, information and referrals to relevant community resources to help women and children begin a new chapter in their lives.
