DIEPPE (GNB) – The provincial government is investing $360,000 to help Crossroads for Women Inc. in Moncton buy a property that will be converted into a new and larger shelter for victims of relationship violence. The organization currently operates a 17-bed transition house.

"Our government is proud to contribute funding to support the work being done by Crossroads for Women in its goal of providing a new and larger shelter for women and children in the Moncton region," said Social Development Minister Madeleine Dubé. "Once completed, this shelter will offer more victims of violence a safe place to begin the transition to a life free of abuse."

Under the Shelter Enhancement Program, the Department of Social Development will provide $300,000 during the next two years, while the Women's Equality Branch will contribute $60,000.

"Violence against women and girls is a societal problem that has a profound and lasting impact on the people it affects," said Justice Minister and Attorney General Marie-Claude Blais, who is also minister for women’s equality. "Women play a vital role in our plan to rebuild New Brunswick, and we are committed to ensuring their safety. This investment goes a long way to ensure that women living in or leaving abusive situations have a safe place to which to turn when they are most frightened and vulnerable and connects them with the resources they need to get help."

The Shelter Enhancement Program offers financial assistance to repair and renovate shelters and to acquire or build new shelters and second-stage housing.
