FREDERICTON (GNB) – Four new affordable housing units for low-income families, non-elderly singles and persons with disabilities were officially opened today in Fredericton.

"Investing in affordable housing is fundamental to rebuilding New Brunswick together," said Social Development Minister Madeleine Dubé. "I am pleased to celebrate this project, which shows our government's commitment to enhancing the quality of life of New Brunswickers and their families while living within our means."

The development is located at 242 York St., on the grounds of St. Paul's United Church. It is receiving more than $351,000 in rent supplements from the provincial government and $160,000 from the federal government. The project was developed by the Trustees of St. Paul's United Church.

"Through investments in affordable housing, our government is providing assistance to those who need it most in Fredericton and in all corners of the country," said Fredericton MP Keith Ashfield. "We are committed to making communities stronger through projects such as the one at St. Paul's United Church."

Ashfield appeared on behalf of Candice Bergen, minister of state (social development).

Funding was made available under the 2009 extension of the Canada / New Brunswick Affordable Housing Initiative.

The units were built to high energy-efficiency standards and involved consultation with Efficiency NB. Builders of multi-unit residential buildings can receive technical support from Efficiency NB on how to meet energy efficiency targets.
