FREDERICTON (GNB) – Individuals living with disabilities now have access to a portable rent supplement that will support them in their search to find and keep appropriate accommodations.

“The provincial government is investing $225,000 to create and implement the Portable Rent Supplement for Persons with Disabilities Program,” said Social Development Minister Madeleine Dubé. “I am pleased that our government’s commitment to fund this program will provide a monthly subsidy to help persons with disabilities obtain affordable, adequate and suitable rental accommodations of their choice.”

Portable rent supplements are assigned to a person rather than to a landlord. The program’s main objective is to provide eligible individuals the freedom to choose housing that meets their specific needs.

To be eligible, participants must be in one of the following situations:

●    the individual currently occupies a crowded or inadequate dwelling;
●    they pay 30 per cent or more of their income for shelter;
●    they have a need for special purpose accommodation; or
●    the total household income is at or below the Housing Income Limit, which varies by household size and area of the province.

The program allows qualifying individuals to have their rents reduced to 30 per cent of the adjusted household income.

“Our government is committed to helping people with disabilities obtain access to the support and services they need to reach their potential,” said Dubé. “Through initiatives such as this, we are reaffirming our commitment.”
