MONCTON (GNB) – Thirty new affordable housing units for non-elderly singles and persons with disabilities were officially opened today at 86 Cameron St. in Moncton.

“Investing in affordable housing is fundamental to rebuilding New Brunswick,” said Social Development Minister Madeleine Dubé. “I am pleased to celebrate this project, which shows our government's commitment to enhancing the quality of life of New Brunswickers, while living within our means.”

The development is receiving more than $2.7 million in rent supplements from the provincial government. The federal government is contributing $1.2 million. Résidence Cameron Ltd. developed the overall project of 61 units.

“Our government is helping to make affordable housing available in New Brunswick and across Canada,” said Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe MP Robert Goguen. “These new units in Moncton will help individuals with low-income and persons with disabilities have access to safe and affordable housing that meets their needs.”

Goguen attended for Candice Bergen, federal minister of state for social development.

Funding was made available through the 2011-2014 Investment in Affordable Housing program.

The units were built to high energy-efficiency standards as per the Provincial Green Building Policy.
