UPPER MIRAMICHI (GNB) – Construction is underway on a new nursing home in Upper Miramichi.

Simpson Building Contractors has been awarded the tender to build the replacement structure for the Central New Brunswick Nursing Home.

“Caring for our seniors is a responsibility our government takes very seriously,” said Social Development Minister Madeleine Dubé. “This replacement home will make a substantial difference for seniors living in the Upper Miramichi area.”

The $9.12 million building will feature 30 nursing home beds. It is expected to be completed by the summer of 2015. It will be located at 3466 Route 625 in Boiestown.

"It’s exciting to see construction of this facility moving forward,” said Southwest Miramichi MLA Jake Stewart who attended the event for Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Claude Williams. "Before long, the residents and staff will have a new, secure facility that will enhance their quality of life in the community they call home."

The nursing home is part of the provincial government's 2011-2016 Nursing Home Renovation and Replacement Plan, under which 354 nursing home beds and 704 specialized care beds are being created.
