SAINT JOHN (GNB) – Six affordable housing units for low-income non-elderly singles officially opened today in Saint John.

“Adequate, accessible and affordable housing is a significant factor in helping to enhance the quality of life of New Brunswickers and their families,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister Trevor Holder. "Projects such as this one are a good example of how government and the community can work together to rebuild the province. Our government believes that we have a key role to play in helping people obtain affordable housing. We appreciate all the partners who made this a reality.”

Holder attended the event for Social Development Minister Madeleine Dubé.

The development will receive more than $485,000 in rent supplements from the provincial government. The federal government contributed $240,000. Saint John NonProfit Housing Inc. developed the overall project of six units.

“With the opening of this project, low-income individuals in Saint John will now have access to quality, affordable housing that meets their specific needs, while remaining close to their families and friends,” said Saint John MP Rodney Weston. “This has been a tremendous project for this community and we are proud to be part of it.”

Weston attended the opening for Candice Bergen, minister of state for Social Development.

Funding was made available through the 2009 extension of the Canada-New Brunswick Affordable Housing Initiative.

The units were built to high energy-efficiency standards obtaining an EnerGuide for new housing rating of 80 or higher.
