FREDERICTON (GNB) – Liberty Lane Inc., a Fredericton-based organization that provides second-stage housing and family violence prevention programs, has received $600,000 in funding from the federal and provincial governments for the construction and renovation of 10 units.
“Providing safe and affordable homes for women and children is incredibly important,” said Families and Children Minister Stephen Horsman. “This joint project between New Brunswick and the federal government shows how important it is to work together for the betterment of everyone.”
Liberty Lane helps women and children who have experienced domestic violence. It provides safe housing and community services that help women and their families become independent.
“The peace of mind that comes with having a secure and stable home is invaluable,” said Fredericton MP Matt DeCourcey. “These units are another example of the federal government’s commitment toward ensuring that survivors of domestic violence are able to enjoy a safe and stable environment.”
The 10 units were completed in July and officially opened today. The province will provide rent supplements for the units.
“This financial contribution will make an important and lasting difference in people’s lives,” said Fiona Williams, executive director at Liberty Lane. “The funds provided to Liberty Lane Inc. mean vulnerable women and children have a safe place to live with supports on-site that can help them heal and move forward.”
The funding for Liberty Lane came from two cost-shared agreements between the federal and provincial governments: the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation-New Brunswick Investment in Affordable Housing Agreement and the Social Infrastructure Funds Agreement.
