EDMUNDSTON (GNB) – L’Escale MadaVic, a transition house in Edmundston, has received $342,000 from the provincial and federal governments for renovation projects.

The transition house provides 15 beds for individuals who have experienced family violence.

“It is crucial that we offer safe options for those who are leaving situations of family violence,” said Economic Development Minister Francine Landry. “This project is an example of how our provincial and federal governments are working together to help provide safe and secure temporary housing options for New Brunswickers who need them.”

Landry spoke on behalf of Families and Children Minister Stephen Horsman.

Funding for the renovations came from the Social Infrastructure Fund Agreement, which is a cost-shared agreement between the federal and provincial governments. It is dispersed through the Department of Social Development’s Shelter Enhancement Program, which offers financial assistance to repair and renovate shelters and to acquire or build new shelters and second-stage housing.

“Our government is committed to working with the Province of New Brunswick to develop and implement local solutions to housing,” said Madawaska-Restigouche MP René Arseneault. “This investment allows L’Escale MadaVic Inc. the ability to offer a home to people fleeing family violence. We are pleased to contribute to this project as it represents 15 units of safe and affordable housing.”

Arseneault attended for federal Families, Children and Social Development Minister Jean-Yves Duclos, who is also minister responsible for the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.
