SHERBROOKE, Que. (GNB) – New Brunswick athletes will take centre stage Saturday as competitions begin at the Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, Que.

The New Brunswick men's baseball team will be the first to see action when New Brunswick faces Saskatchewan in the afternoon. Women's soccer squares off against British Columbia in an afternoon match to be televised live on TSN / RDS at 3:35 p.m. Atlantic time. Women's softball plays a pair of contests Saturday, facing off against Saskatchewan then Quebec.

Other teams to see action include sailing, tennis, and mountain bike, men's and women's volleyball.

On Friday evening, Cassidy Richards of Fredericton led Team NB into the opening ceremonies at the Stade de l’Université de Sherbrooke.

Women's volleyball coach Jilliane Goulet participated in the event, taking the coaches' pledge on behalf of all coaches at the Canada Summer Games.

Premier David Alward and Healthy and Inclusive Communities Minister Dorothy Shephard attended the event, supporting and encouraging Team NB members. Prime Minister Stephen Harper declared the Games officially open.
