SHERBROOKE, Que. (GNB) – Team NB's track and field squad won one gold, two silver and two bronze medals Thursday at the Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, Que.

“It has been a phenomenal day,” said Jennifer Butler, Team NB’s track and field coach. “To have five medals on one day is a dream.”

Caleb Jones of Saint John struck gold in the men’s javelin, while his teammate Mitch Quigg of Saint John claimed bronze in the same event. Para-athlete Veronica Coombes of Moncton rolled her way to a pair of silver medals in the 400-metre and 1,500-metre races.

Geneviève Lalonde of Moncton earned bronze in the 1,500-metre race Thrusday evening to claim her second medal at the Games. Lalonde mined a gold medal in the 2,000-metre steeplechase Tuesday night.

Thursday’s five-medal performance on the track and field lifts Team NB’s medal count to 11: four gold, three silver and four bronze.

“The energy and vibes of the athletes are just great," said Butler. "We had the whole Team New Brunswick in the stadium cheering us.”

Team NB’s track and field team returns to the track Friday. Coombes has another shot at a medal in the 1,500-metre race. Several other athletes are in finals.

Team NB’s rowing squad hits Lac Magog Friday in three medal events with crews rowing in three separate A Finals. The rowers can also earn more medals in additional A Finals Saturday, the last day of competition at the Games.

The men’s soccer team returns to field to face  Prince Edward Island for placing. The team lost a 1-0 heartbreaker to Newfoundland and Labrador on Thursday.

The women’s basketball tips off against Saskatchewan in an afternoon match at Bishop’s University.

The third round of golf goes Friday at Milby Golf Club, while fencers return to action at the CEGEP de Sherbrooke.

The triathlon returns to the water and streets of nearby Magog with the men’s and women’s team events.

The women’s beach volleyball duo of Judith Desjardins and Brittany Robinson, both of Fredericton, meets Saskatchewan for placing.
