PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. – Scott Ring struck gold in the men’s individual air pistol competition Thursday at the Canada Winter Games in Prince George, B.C.

“I went into the competition with no huge expectations,” said Ring, of St. George, moments after winning Team New Brunswick’s first gold medal of the Games. “I just wanted to shoot my absolute best and that’s all I could do.”

Ring’s 192.0 points was a Canada Games record.

Ring’s gold medal performance lifts Team New Brunswick’s medal count to four at the Canada Winter Games.

Ring’s target shooting teammates Emily Dean and Delayne Donohue, both of St. Stephen, earned Team New Brunswick’s first medal of the Games Monday, scoring silver in the women’s air rifle team competition.

New Brunswick’s other medal winners include archers Alyssa Murphy, of Hanwell, and Hailey Baisley, of Miramichi, who each won bronze medals Tuesday in separate archery competitions.

Team New Brunswick’s ringette squad goes for bronze Friday against Team Quebec. The ringette squad lost 7-4 to Team Manitoba in a key semi-final match Thursday.

Team New Brunswick’s wheelchair basketball squad defeated Team Manitoba 50-26 Thursday night. The wheelchair basketballers lost 60-56 to Team Ontario earlier in the day.

The 2-4 Fredericton curling foursome of Ben MacFarlane, Carter Small, Adam Tracy and Brent Wishart, defeated Team Quebec 9-5 in the morning draw. The crew was slated to meet Team Northwest Territories in Thursday’s evening draw.

Danielle Dumouchelle, of Quispamsis, was the top New Brunswick female skater in the 1000 metre long track event, placing 17th, Freya Clark, of St. Andrews placed 23rd followed by Abby Jackson, of Moncton, 29th and Maggie Oliver, of Grand Bay-Westfield, 32nd.

In the men’s 1500 metre long track event Ian Vershoor, of Berwick, was the top New Brunswicker, coming in  27th. Gabriel-André Savoie, of Dieppe, placed 28th followed by teammate Andrew Peppard, of Chamcook, 29th.

The long track speed skaters return to Prince George late Friday following their last event in the morning in Fort St. John, site of the long track speed skating event.

The women’s hockey team lost 4-1 to host Team British Columbia in a late Thursday night qualification game.
