WINNIPEG (GNB) – Team New Brunswick athletes competed well today under extreme heat conditions at the 2017 Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg.

“We tried to prepare as best we could,” said Jon Tracy, coach of the triathlon team. “We did a lot of hydration to prepare. I told them not to pass an aid station without drinking.”

Athletes faced a second day of above seasonal temperatures with near 38 humidex values being observed at several different locations in southern Manitoba.

In men’s triathlon, Jeremie Gervais, of Dieppe, was the top Team New Brunswick performer, finishing 26th, followed by Will Oliver, of Grand Bay-Westfield (28th) and Maxime Aubé, of Dieppe (29th). Hayley Touchburn, of Moncton, was the top New Brunswicker in the women’s race, finishing 17th overall, followed by Mélisande Longelin, of Dieppe (22nd) and Margaret Oliver, of Grand Bay-Westfield (23rd).

The triathletes return to competition Thursday in the team relays followed by mixed team relays Friday at Birds Hill Provincial Park.

The track and field athletes hit the University of Manitoba track today in several competitions. Samantha Taylor, of Canterbury, finished 11th in the women’s 100 metre, followed by Véronique Omalosanga in 14th. In women’s javelin, Melissa Pellerin, of Dieppe, finished 7th and Cocagne’s Kyla Hughes placed 10th. Competitions continued into the evening today and resume Tuesday.

New Brunswick’s men’s baseball team plays Nova Scotia in its last round-robin game Tuesday. The team lost 7-0 to Ontario and dropped their record to 1-3.

In basketball, the women’s team advanced to Tuesday’s quarter-final match against host Manitoba with a 67-23 win over Yukon this evening. The men’s basketballers will play either Ontario Tuesday or Yukon Wednesday. The team played a late game tonight.

The women’s soccer team plays Newfoundland and Labrador Tuesday afternoon in the consolation round.

The rowers hit Rabbit Lake at the Kenora Rowing Club today. Team New Brunswick’s Aiden Best advanced to Thursday’s consolation final in the men’s single scull. The women’s quadruple sculls are in Thursday’s final after finishing first in Monday’s heat while the men’s quadruple sculls hit the consolation final. The women’s pair advanced to Thursday’s final, while the men’s lightweight are in the consolation final.

In beach volleyball, Team New Brunswick’s men squad will play matches against Saskatchewan and Yukon while the women’s team will play Nova Scotia Tuesday.

The men’s mountain bikers return to competition Tuesday in the team relay event. Team New Brunswick’s sailing squad returns to Lake Winnipeg for another round of competition.

In men’s softball, Team New Brunswick has two games remaining on the round-robin schedule. They play Saskatchewan Tuesday and Alberta Wednesday before Thursday’s placing match-up.
