WINNIPEG (GNB) – Team New Brunswick swimmers Jacob Gallant and Brooklyn Douthwright each won a bronze medal today at the Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg.

Gallant claimed bronze in the men’s 400-metre medley event this evening at the Pan Am Pool.

“I have been dreaming of this for years,” said Gallant after this evening’s race. “I was trying to hold my own and take it home on the breaststroke.”

Minutes later, Douthwright tied for the third and won a bronze medal in the women’s 100-metre freestyle event.

“I am really happy with my performance,” she said. “Tonight, I took it out as fast as I could.”

Today’s medal performance in the pool lifts Team New Brunswick’s medal count to 10: three gold, two silver and five bronze medals.

In cycling, the team hit the road at Birds Hill Provincial Park for the individual time trial races. Danielle Dumouchel was the top New Brunswick female racer, finishing 19th overall in the women’s 13-kilometre race, followed Sarah Gilbert (22nd), Laura Clarke (26th) and Amanda Lee (28th). The men’s 20-kilometre event saw New Brunswick’s Chandler Scott cross the finish line in 17th place, followed by Aiden Schenkels (35th), Julien Roussel (36th), Paul Tremblay (39th) and Alex Cormier (40th).

The road cycling team members are sporting “LNH20” under the collars of their uniforms at games in tribute to Ellen Watters, the former New Brunswick competitive cyclist. Last December, Watters passed away after being critically injured in a collision with a car while on a training ride in Sussex.

“We felt it was important to honour Ellen’s memory,” said Jean-Guy Cormier, Team New Brunswick’s cycling coach, who also coached Watters for two seasons in 2012-2013. “She frequently used LNH20 as a play on words for her name. She would mark her cycling gear with it and sign emails with it. It became her tag and was easily recognized by everyone who knew her.”

The women’s cycling team returns to the road Wednesday in an 80-kilometre road race event while the men race their 120-kilometre road race Thursday at the provincial park.

In golf, Calvin Ross shot an opening round 71 at the Southwood Golf and Country Club for a fifth-place tie and became New Brunswick’s top men’s golfer. Ross won the Canadian Junior Golf Championship last week in Kingston, Ontario. Stuart Earle shot 76 and Samuel Reid 80. In the women’s event, Laura Jones was the top New Brunswicker with an opening 76. Laura Wesselius shot 81 and Sarah Holt 86.

In tennis, New Brunswick defeated Northwest Territories 6-0 in the team event. Two New Brunswick players advanced to individual quarter-final play. Hielke Moore defeated his Saskatchewan opponent 2-0 to advance to the quarter finals. Maya Lal also defeated a Saskatchewan opponent 2-0 to advance as well.

The women’s volleyball record is 2-1 after beating Northwest Territories 3-0 today. They play Alberta Wednesday. The men’s volleyball squad defeated Newfoundland and Labrador 3-0 this morning but lost 3-0 to host Manitoba in the evening match.

Women’s softball beat Nova Scotia 10-3 in a morning match before British Columbia defeated them 16-1.

The men’s soccer team made its games debut this evening with a 4-0 win over Northwest Territories. The squad plays Newfoundland and Labrador Wednesday.
