SAINT JOHN (GNB) – The provincial government has invested in the restoration of Loyalist House and the development of Fort LaTour through the Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture’s Built Heritage Program.

The New Brunswick Historical Society has received $30,000, which will go towards the first phase of a planned restoration for Loyalist House. They also received an additional $55,000 through the Regional Development Corporation.

The Fort LaTour Development Authority has received $5,000 to update and revise its 2004 development concept, cost estimates and business plan with the intention of developing a cultural tourism product in the heart of Saint John.

“New Brunswick is home to a rich history that we can all be proud of and our government is committed to preserving it so that we can continue to share our stories in our communities and around the world,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister Trevor Holder. “We are pleased to work with the New Brunswick Historical Society and the Fort LaTour Development Authority as we take strategic steps toward this common goal.”

Loyalist House is both a National Historic Site and a Local Historic Site designated by the city of Saint John.

“Loyalist House is a true gem in the heart of Saint John and we are committed to sharing this important piece of our provincial history with New Brunswickers and visitors alike,” said the president of the New Brunswick Historical Society Kathy Wilson. “We are thrilled to work with the provincial government to enhance the unique experience Loyalist House offers.”

Fort LaTour is a National Historic Site as well as a Provincial Heritage Place designated for its strategic location at the mouth of the Saint John River and its history as indicated by its archaeological resources. More than 10,000 artifacts from all periods – 2000 BC to 1900 A. D. – were recovered during excavations that took place in 1955-63. 

“Fort LaTour has long stood as one of Saint John’s historical icons in the heart of the city and we have an opportunity to ensure that its potential as a cultural tourism product is realized,” said the chair of the Fort LaTour Development Authority Beth Kelly Hatt. “The provincial government has demonstrated a strong commitment to developing heritage resources in our province. We look forward to continuing to work with them and our local and regional community to bring our plans to fruition.”
