RED DEER, Alta. (GNB) – Team New Brunswick won silver in para cross-country skiing and bronze in judo on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at the Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alta.
Para-nordic cross-country skier Céline Kavanaugh, of Grand Falls, and her guide Charlotte Toner, of Fredericton, skied to a silver medal in the women’s para-nordic standing sprint.
Kavanaugh and Toner are double silver medallists. The duo won a silver medal on Tuesday in the para-nordic standing 2.5-km event.
In judo, Keeley Hussey, of Grand Bay-Westfield, won bronze in the women’s individual 70-kilogram bout.
“So far, my experience at the Canada Games has been really amazing,” said Hussey. “I have seen a lot of improvements with my fighting and I hope to continue down this path.”
Team New Brunswick’s now has seven medals: one gold, three silver and three bronze.
The men’s curling team composed of Rahman Dalrymple, Alexander Peasley, Logan Pugsley and Boo Porter entered Wednesday’s late evening draw against Northwest Territories with a 2-4 record. They lost to Alberta in the morning draw. On Thursday, Team New Brunswick will face Saskatchewan then British Columbia.
The women’s foursome (2-4) of Rachel Brewer, Erica Cliff, Ashley Cormier and Deanna MacDonald defeated Alberta 5-4 in the morning. The curlers were to battle Northwest Territories in the evening. On Thursday, they will also face Saskatchewan and British Columbia.
The women’s hockey team won its first match of the games, defeating Prince Edward Island 3-2 on Wednesday night. They will face British Columbia in Thursday’s quarter-finals.
On Thursday, archers will return to competition with the individual compound and recurve events.
The badminton team will play in mixed team preliminaries while the squash team will face team crossovers.
The synchronized trampoline competition makes its debut on Thursday. The schedule also calls for the novice female free figure skating program and Special Olympics level three figure skating.
Cross-country skiers will return to the trails for the women’s 10-km classic and the men’s 15-km classic.
The alpine skiers completed their downhill competitions at Nakiska on Wednesday. The alpine team returns to Red Deer to train for Saturday’s ski cross competition at nearby Canyon Ski Resort.
