FREDERICTON (GNB) – The 2020 summer Olympics in Tokyo begin July 23 and several athletes, coaches and officials from New Brunswick will be representing Team Canada.

“It’s amazing to see such outstanding talent from athletes, coaches and officials in our province and I couldn’t be prouder that they’ve made it all the way to the Olympics,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister Tammy Scott-Wallace. “These individuals have endured many challenges over the past year and a half, have made difficult sacrifices, and are incredible role models for all New Brunswickers. I wish everyone the very best in their events.”

The following individuals from New Brunswick will be taking part in the Olympics:

  • Geneviève Lalonde from Moncton will compete in athletics.
  • Catharine Pendrel from Harvey will compete in mountain biking.
  • Jill Irving from Moncton will serve as an alternate in equestrian.
  • Mike Butler from Saint John will serve as a badminton coach.
  • Jessica Sears from Memramcook will serve on the medical team as a massotherapist.
  • Katie Hess from Sackville will participate on the equestrian dressage team.
  • Eric Desroches from Edmundston and Gérald Arsenault from Quispamsis will be officials for badminton.
  • Bob Stanton from Fredericton will be the director of referees for softball.

The Olympics will take place from July 23 to Aug. 8.

A separate announcement will be issued on the Paralympics, which will run from Aug. 24 to Sept. 5.
