FREDERICTON (GNB) – Mission staff have been selected to lead Team New Brunswick at the 2022 Canada Summer Games in Niagara, Ont., and the 2023 Canada Winter Games in Prince Edward Island.

“Mission staff play a lead role in supporting athletes, coaches and managers, and contribute in a variety of ways to ensure that all Team NB preparations are in place,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister Tammy Scott-Wallace. “We are excited to welcome representatives from across the province to support Team NB at the upcoming Canada Games.”

Mission staff volunteers were selected based on their experience and involvement within the New Brunswick amateur sport system. About 20 mission staff will accompany Team NB athletes to each set of Canada Games.

Chef de mission Nicole Smith will lead the team of mission staff to ensure Team NB participants have a successful and fulfilling experience, from working with the host committee on transportation, accommodation and sport schedules, to delivering mandatory training to all participants.

“Our focus has always been, and will always be, on the athletes,” said Smith. “We want to give every team member the best chance to produce their best performance on the day that matters most to them. It is very exciting to have such a high-calibre group of passionate sport leaders together to support the athletes on their journey.”

About the Canada Games

The Canada Games, a national multi-sport competition, are traditionally held every two years, alternating between winter and summer, and have participation from every province and territory. The next Canada Summer Games will be held Aug. 6-21, 2022, in Niagara, Ontario, and will bring together about 5,000 athletes, coaches and managers from across the country. These Games were originally scheduled for August of 2021 but were postponed due to health and safety risks related to COVID-19.

The 2023 Canada Winter Games will unite more than 3,600 athletes, coaches and managers, across 20 sports, from Feb. 18 to March 5, 2023, in Prince Edward Island. It is a unique occurrence to have only six months between the Summer and Winter Games.

Scott-Wallace said the Canada Games are an important component of New Brunswick’s sport system, and a key event in the development of young athletes, providing them with an opportunity to compete in a multi-sport atmosphere and preparing them as the next generation of international competitors.
