FREDERICTON (GNB) – Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister Tammy Scott-Wallace is congratulating New Brunswick athletes, coaches and officials for rising to the highest level of athletic competition at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics as members of Team Canada.
“Getting to the Olympics is an amazing accomplishment,” said Scott-Wallace. “Our New Brunswick Olympic participants dedicated years of their lives to achieving the goal of competing in the Beijing Winter Olympic Games. We are extremely proud of all our homegrown New Brunswick Olympians.”
Short-track speed skater Courtney Sarault from Moncton competed for Team Canada, finishing fourth in the mixed team relay, sixth in the women’s 3,000-metre relay, 11th in the women’s 1,000-metre competition and 11th in the women’s 1,500-metre event.
Brendan Corey, who grew up in Fredericton, competed for Australia in short-track speed skating, placing 15th in the men’s 1,000-metre – an Australian national record – and 21st in the men’s 500-metre.
Other participants from New Brunswick included:
· Serge LeBlanc from Sainte-Marie-de-Kent – equipment manager with Canada’s gold medal-winning women’s hockey team
· Ryan Hamilton from New Maryland – mental performance consultant with Canada’s men’s hockey team
· Betty Dermer-Norris from Fredericton – Canadian Olympic Committee staff
· Nicole LeBlanc-Richard from Dieppe and Cynthia Benson from Saint John – figure skating judges
· Stephen Gough, formerly of New Maryland – short-track speed skating coach for the United States
The Olympics were officially closed on Feb. 20 after 16 days of competition.
The 2022 Paralympic Games will take place March 4-13. The Games will feature five sports: wheelchair curling, para ice hockey, para alpine skiing, para snowboard, and para nordic ski (para biathlon and para cross-country skiing). The two New Brunswick participants are:
· Mark Fawcett from Saint John – para snowboard coach
· Mitchell Furlotte from Bathurst – para ice hockey team administrator
