FREDERICTON (CNB) - Lt.-Gov. Herménégilde Chiasson is inviting the public to celebrate New Brunswick Day, Monday, Aug. 4, on the grounds of Old Government House in Fredericton.

"I hope all residents and visitors to our province will join me in celebrating New Brunswick Day at this national and provincial historic site - New Brunswick's Ceremonial Home," said Chiasson in releasing the schedule of events for the holiday.

"This free, backyard tradition features New Brunswick performers, ice cream and lemonade until it's gone, a military display from Canadian Forces Base Gagetown, the New Brunswick Day Merit Awards and more," said Chiasson. "We are also making this a 'green' event - with bio-degradeable cups, a solar panel to run the stage and free seedlings to those who will plant them (courtesy J. D. Irving, Ltd.). "It's the opportunity to do something good for New Bunswick - and something good for the environment."

The Office of the Lieutenant-Governor is collaborating with the City of Fredericton, the New Brunswick Provincial Capital Commission, the New Brunswick Youth Advisory Council, the Fredericton Solid Waste Commission, CFB Gagetown and volunteers to present New Brunswick Day.

"Many years ago, my predecessors held garden parties, and a who's who of provincial society were invited," Chiasson said. "We have decided to lessen the formality of these gatherings and offer the chance to celebrate to thousands more people."

New Brunswick Day begins with the Armed Forces display at 10 a.m. (until 4 p.m.), with rides and tours of military equipment. Music, ice cream and cold drinks will be offered, beginning at 1:30 p.m.

"And thanks to our friends at CFB Gagetown, we will close New Brunswick Day with a fireworks display over Old Government House around 10 p.m.," said Chiasson. "I hope people bring blankets, lawn chairs, picnic lunches and the entire family to this historic residence to celebrate all things New Brunswick."
